CHECK UP
Written and directed by Daniel Rusiecki, Check-Up is a short film about Sterling, a rising basketball star on the verge of greatness. He is trained by his abusive older brother, Ta'Jay, who is an ex basketball player, and will stop at nothing to unlock his brothers potential. The film dives deep into what a relationship between siblings can look like and more importantly, how a relationship can be destroyed.
Faced with pressures from coaches, friends, and his brother, Sterling is forced to confront himself, but also his relationship with Ta’Jay. The challenges raised from Ta’Jay’s envy and animosity threaten to destroy his relationship with Sterling.
Through the referral from a mutual friend, Daniel contacted me around the end of May and requested for me to work on a poster for the film. He provided me with movie poster inspirations and photos/stills from the movie to work with. I started by sketching out rough ideas, taking inspiration from the pitch deck provided by Daniel as well as other motifs in the movie such as basketball.
PROGRESS WORK
INSPIRATION
While the film uses basketball as a connecting factor between two brothers, the primary focus is to illustrate the problems that toxic masculinity and abuse can breed.
